Party Wednesday. When I first started doing sub jobs, I thought I'd hire a cleaner to come every couple of weeks to clean the house, but when I did the math, it didn't make sense. I make $88/day subbing. A cleaner charges $100+.
So today, as I mopped and scrubbed and vacuumed, I had a dangerous conversation with myself about what I'm worth. Since I quit working in 1998, I haven't assigned a number to my time or what I do. It makes for a weird sense of identity, as I can't quantify my value.
See, everywhere else in the world, I am my wages. But here, I am a presence. The Mom. The Partner. Hopefully the Comfort Person. The maker of Home.
The Bible says my worth is far above rubies. I think I'll go with that.

Prom Day!
The festivities started with breakfast at our little townhouse.
After a mall scavenger hunt and photos at Tibble Fork, dinner was served at Chez Larson.
The maitre d' was legendary.
Once dinner was underway, the staff piled into the maitre d''s truck and headed to Chic Fil A.
So fun! I'll post the fancy, official photos of the prom goers all dressed up when I get them.

Last night was Journey, tonight was Mark and Lois in the "Lamb of God" choir. Brad and I are very diverse concert goers.
(And probably going to hell. Because of the acoustics where we were sitting, the sound through the speakers bounced back at us and made the narration almost impossible to understand. This led to some goofy texting between us and totally inappropriate laughter. I blame it on the Journey concert the night before. It made us feel and act like teenagers again.)

For Christmas, I got Brad tickets to the Journey concert tonight. We decided to make a get-away of it and stayed at the Grand America in downtown Salt Lake.
Toto opened, and their set totally took us back to high school gym dances. All that was missing was the combined smell of Polo cologne and Doublemint gum.
We loved singing along at the top of our lungs to every Journey song. This moment was during "Open Arms", arguably one of the best love songs ever recorded. Although Brad and I agreed the new lead singer is good, we both wished he was Steve Perry. There's something magical about Steve singing the songs he actually lived.

I'm trying a new thing called Beehive Meals. You order ten freezer meals per month that can be tossed into a crock pot for ready-to-eat dinners. I'll let you know what I think...

Hopefully these are the fixings for a cute prom table this weekend. Thank heaven for Jenny and her stuff.

Luke's stats after their game today. Remember when I said Luke is part of the solution? An .800 batting average is pretty spectacular. And these stats don't even show the killer play he made in left field this afternoon, when he caught a fly ball well in foul territory, then fired it to first base to get another runner out who didn't tag up. It was hands-down the play of the game!
Sadly, though, his team still lost. He confided in me that when he led the team meeting after the game, he said a swear because he was so mad at all the errors. I couldn't get mad.

To say Luke was excited to be placed on the Frosh team this season would be a big, fat lie. He was pretty much devastated to be one of only two sophomores who didn't advance to JV. That hurt, especially when he felt he out-played several of the players who did move up.
But then the Frosh coach took him aside and told him he (the coach) specifically requested Luke play on Frosh. He wanted a leader, someone the younger players could look up to. Coach Peck told Luke he is well-qualified to play JV, but Coach held him on Frosh. Essentially, it was all Coach's fault, because he wanted Luke over any of the other JV players.
Then the team voted Luke as one of the captains, and Luke has STEPPED UP. This is him cheering his team on, yelling so loud and so much that he came home with no voice.
I am super proud of this player of mine. He could sulk and berate his less-experienced team (and don't kid yourself, he gets pretty frustrated), but instead he is making himself part of the solution. And he's playing all innings of every game, which he wouldn't do on JV.
So yeah, it stung his pride. But I think this may be his best season yet.

After a bright, sunny day of St. George baseball, this boy was tired, sunburned, and cute as the dickens. As were Brad and I, although we were slightly less cute.

See these big smiles? And pink cheeks? We’re happy and freezing after watching Luke catch ALL the balls in left field—even making a double play—and lead the JV team in batting. Not bad for the kid on the Frosh team who was invited to "play up." It was supposed to be much warmer in St. George, but we’re not complaining.

It rarely happens, so I had to snap a photo to document Pepper at home with us for an entire evening. And by "at home with us," I mean he's in his Happy Place with the Xbox in the basement.

Sophie braided Luke's hair at the party last night, and he left it in until tonight. Who needs a perm when you've got a cousin with super braiding skills?

This little cutie is ONE! We got together at Dave and Becky's for a party, and for Charlotte, the highlight was a Dum-Dum sucker. I still can't get over how happy I am to live here and be able to celebrate all the things with family.

Cedar Valley baseball tryouts. That's my Shmukie about to catch the ball at shortstop.
BTW: he made the Frosh team.
